Owner Recalls Opening of Inn
by CAMI DIBATTISTA
The Campbell House B&B, a Victorian style inn located on East Main Street, celebrates 20 years of business this month.“In 20 years, countless guests have entered into Campbell House and my life, some are friends, some have passed, some come once, some return — all are the reason I am celebrating 20 years in business,” said owner and innkeeper, Patti Campbell, who said she still has her first dollar bill hanging above the check-in counter today.
Campbell decided to leave her job as vice president of an international beauty salon to run her own bed and breakfast in 1993. She recalls that the home needed a lot of work when she purchased it, but that she could not help but see the potential in it.
“There were days of tears, laughter, mistakes, frustration and exhaustion,” said Campbell, “but the desire to open was a driving force.”Campbell fondly recalls the first day the inn opened. She had checked and rechecked the rooms, making sure everything was perfect, she said. But as she walked into a newly renovated bathroom mere minutes before opening her doors, she realized something was not quite right — she had neglected to hang a mirror above the bathroom sink. Campbell rushed to a nearby antique store and found a Victorian mirror she liked. She hurried home and hung the mirror and it is still in the same spot today.
“My first guests arrived never knowing just five minutes before there was no mirror,” said Campbell.
Today three efficiency motel rooms and six uniquely decorated bedrooms, complete with private bathrooms, are available. Eclectic decor throughout the inn consists of antique furnishings and toys and the owner’s collection of Campbell’s Soup memorabilia.
Campbell strives for “old fashioned charm with today’s comforts” at her inn. She offers the amenities of today — such as flat screen TVs, Wi-Fi and central air conditioning — with “the grandeur of yesteryear” — claw foot tubs, antique wardrobes and an original Victorian sofa.
One couple who stays at Campbell House every year for their anniversary say the inn has a “warm and welcoming environment.”A homemade breakfast is included with a stay at Campbell House. Campbell has a reputation for making special breakfast creations.“She is a wonderful cook, with delicious and creative breakfasts,” wrote another former guest on the inn’s website.
While Campbell admits she enjoys cooking, especially breakfast, she says she never follows a recipe for her dishes and therefore can not recreate them exactly, though some repeat customers request that she try.Campbell offers special packages for guests getting married, celebrating an anniversary or those who just wish to get away and enjoy the beauty of the Laurel Highlands.
“Ligonier has unique characteristics and charm; I couldn’t have chosen a better location,” Campbell said, “I enjoying sharing our town with guests from all over the U.S., Canada as well as many foreign countries.”
Campbell’s hard work and attention to detail have made her dream — running the Campbell House B&B — a reality — one that she lives every day.
“I can’t believe 20 years has passed,” Campbell said, “The days turn into years so quickly.”

Campbell House was featured in Backroads Magazine. Some of the article is re-printed below.
Campbell House is located right down on Main Street east of the Diamond and the entire place has a most charming way about it.
Patti has six comfortable well-appointed guest rooms; all with great antiques and some of the best soap ever. You can even buy some of the finer things that pamper you in the room and bring them home to your own casa. There is also a small Efficiency Motel as well for a total of 9 accomodations.
As we said Patti and the Campbell House are very rider-friendly and you can find this B & B on our Backroads Moto-Inn Listing on our website too. She wants you to visit; unlike some B&B owners who shudder at the thought of motorcyclists knocking on their door.
Patti is an interesting woman to talk with and the more you do the more you'll realize she's one of us – she just doesn't ride anymore.
